How to get your Stripe keys

Connect your Stripe account so customers can pay by card.

9 steps · Last checked 11 October 2026

What to open

Each button opens the right page on the other company's site in a new tab, so you can keep these steps open beside it.

Steps

These are the same steps you see beside the settings in your shop's back office.

  1. Press Open Stripe: API keys and sign in. To test first, switch on Test mode (or the sandbox) at the top; switch it off for real payments.
  2. Copy the Publishable key (pk_live_ or pk_test_) into Publishable key below.
  3. Make a restricted key, so Tillzy can only do what it needs: press Create restricted key. If Stripe asks how you'll use it, choose the option to set the permissions yourself. Name it Tillzy.
  4. Leave every permission on None except these: Checkout Sessions: Write; Payment Method Domains: Write; Refunds: Write; Payment Method Configurations: Read; PaymentIntents: Read. For Payouts, also Balance: Read, Payouts: Read and Charges and refunds: Read.
  5. Press Create key, copy the key (rk_live_ or rk_test_) and paste it into Secret key. Your standard secret key (sk_) works too, but it can do anything in your Stripe account.
  6. Press Open Stripe: webhooks, then Add endpoint (or Add destination). Endpoint URL: the address shown on the Checkout page of your online store settings
  7. Pick the events checkout.session.completed, checkout.session.async_payment_succeeded and checkout.session.async_payment_failed, then save. The last two matter for Pay by Bank, which a bank sometimes confirms a little later.
  8. Open the endpoint you made, press Reveal under Signing secret (whsec_) and paste it into Webhook signing secret.
  9. Tick Let customers pay with cards and press Save.

Where it goes in Tillzy

In your shop's back office the same steps sit beside the boxes you fill in. This is a made-up demo shop.

Settings, Payments and checkout in a made-up demo shop: the Stripe steps sit above the Publishable key, Secret key and Webhook signing secret boxes.

Good to know

The webhook makes sure an order is saved even if a customer closes the page straight after paying. If a button later says Stripe didn't allow something, edit the key in Stripe and give it the permission the message names.
